The Mining Industry is of great importance in Brazil's economic scenario and, due to the significant growth of its role year after year, it is becoming one of the segments prone to receiving various technological incentives through Artificial Intelligence (AI). Designed to optimize processes safely and effectively, AI operates within the mining sector through technological solutions such as the use of drones – unmanned aerial vehicles – which can fly over extensive areas and collect important data for the logistics team, among other functions. The use of AI is becoming sought after by all companies that wish to scale rapidly and, within the mining sector, it presents itself as an important solution to work on pillars such as safety and cost-benefit, in addition to increasing the effectiveness of operations. AI solutions come with the aim of generating efficiency in data analysis processes, control and reduction of costs, and automation of certain processes. Inserting these solutions into a company is a way to maximize return on investment and make the corporation grow organically, walking in parallel with other organizations. A benchmark global study conducted by Accenture revealed that, of the 1,500 executives interviewed, 84% believe that their company must invest in Artificial Intelligence (AI) to leverage significant results in the market. On the other hand, 76% reveal difficulty in scaling. According to the same survey, three out of four managers understand that within five years, companies that do not invest in AI will be out of the market. The role of AI as an enabling agent for companies to reach levels of effectiveness in their strategic priorities, understanding important issues and generating safe solutions with affordable value, is clear. The cost of a drone, for example, can be 10 times lower than the cost of a manned aircraft, such as a helicopter. Check out more data on this by clicking here .

Climbing toward competitiveness

While in previous years production power was derived from the amount of labor force a company could command, today we can understand that strategy and process optimization are the path to growing exponentially. The Brazilian Company for Industrial Research and Innovation (Embrapii), in a recent survey, revealed that 76% of participating organizations believe that Artificial Intelligence (AI) has a major impact on the competitiveness of their businesses. Among the corporations in the study, a large part belongs to the Manufacturing Industry sector, responsible for delivering new products to consumers. According to data from Accenture, companies that choose to invest in AI are much closer to reaching a high level of growth within one to two years. In addition, corporations achieve one of the most desired results in the corporate world: growing more and spending less. This happens because the leaders involved tend to be more committed and proactive, working with realistic expectations regarding the tasks necessary to scale, as well as the time the process takes.

Innovation is a bet for safety in the mining sector

The risks of working in the Mining Industry are difficult to bypass, as they revolve around non-modifiable conditions: the type of ore, the geological formation of the rock, the structural conditions of the mine, and the presence of rivers, among others. Accidents, which in 2016 exceeded up to three times the national average, are one of the sector's pain points that can be solved through technological mechanisms, since the use of drones reduces the need for manual on-site inspections. Considering that safety is one of the pillars of mining, it is clear how the use of unmanned aerial vehicles is a strategy that puts the company ahead. Likewise, preventing accidents, even those that do not involve employees, is a preventive measure for expenses. When a conveyor belt undergoes technical wear that causes an unexpected stop, the loss for the company can reach up to $1 million in just 16 hours of interruption. The use of technological solutions that promote more effective inspections and generate subsequent reports for the logistics team is one of the safest ways to ensure the system works. Deeptrack, a solution created by Pix Force in partnership with Eneva, is a great example of the use of AI mechanisms within the mining sector. Applied to drones, the solution was created to bring safety, efficiency, and practicality to conveyor belt inspection processes through infrared and RGB sensors. The drone equipped with the technology becomes capable of indicating individual temperatures and the georeferenced location of each roller, in addition to being able to generate reports that, when evaluated by technicians, provide a general overview of the operation. In this way, it is possible to conduct accurate supervision of the process without putting employees at risk.
